DEJ #12

Quote: They need to understand a new language of expression. The way we are educating is based on nineteenth-century ideas and methods. Here we are, entering the twenty-first century, and you look at our schools and ask, 'Why are we doing things in this ancient way?' Our system of education is locked in a time capsule. You want to say to the people in charge, 'You're not using today's tools! Wake up!'

Reaction: Who couldn't agree with this statement while the world and all the technology in it is rapidly changing and getting more and more incredible and giving us unbelieveable abilities to access information that our parents and grandparents had limited if any access to it at all and you look at our school system and the majority of the teaching methods are exactly the same as when they were in school. How can we expect our generation and future generations to excel and gain the greatest amount of knowledge when we are restricting them with old crippling teaching styles and out of date text books. This course has really made me open my eyes to understand that technology is necessary in today's classroom so we as teachers and future teachers need to step it up!

The arguement made in this article is that there is a wide variety of sex offenders and not all of them are a danger to children in fact most of those that pose athreat to children have not been caught or convicted and are not registered yet. Banning registered sex offenders can keep them from ahcieve social normality and even orevent them from sites that may helop them get a job. Not to mention that there are people that are registered as sex offenders that are completely harmless to our children and our society  and have no reason to be banned from social networking sites.I personally see no reason as to prevent registered sex offenders from being a part of a social network as there are so many incredibly stirct and unbelievalbe rules and some of them are just normal people who have made mistakes the real people who are a threat to the children arent sitting at home looking for them on facebook and even if so raely do they reach out and suceed luring them in through the interent, these people that are more of a dnager are probably out searching for them in public. There fore I see no reason for registered sex offenders to be banned from social networking sites.

Wikipedia: Friend Not Foe

1) Did the class activity about wikipedia and this article change your opinion about the value of wikipedia to society in general and education specifically?

    - Yes I was always tau never to rely on wikipedia because anyone can post on that website, no one ever told me how thoroughly it was checked and updated or that there were any warning signs of a false or outdated article. I think that wikipedia is a great part of our society and is used in my life as a college student at least once during the week. I also think it is a great tool in education because it can be if nothing else a great starting point for a research paper or even a way to teach students how to investigate their sources before they use them.

2) Describe how you might direct students to use wikipedia in your future classroom.

    - I would say I would have my students use it to help them learn about a specific topic and probably have them use additional sources related to the article and also maybe ask them to pick out any faults they found in the wikipedia article based on their previous knowledge and research on other credible sites and sources.

Wikipedia

a. What is Wikipedia?
    - a multi lingual encyclopedia project

b. How would you answer the question posed in this piece “How reliable can a source be when anyone can edit it?”
    - The fact that anyone can edit it is both good and bad, It gives any one despite their lack of knowledge to write what they choose but I feel that there are more people that would correct the false facts.

c. Who do the creators of Wikipedia place their trust in when it comes to weeding out misinformation?
-They feel that with so many people actively watching errors will be weeded out sooner rather than later

d. Why did founder Larry Sanger leave Wikipedia?
     - He believed it should give more authority to excperts and left to create another site

e. What would abuse or vandalism look like on a Wikipedia page?
    - it typically looks unorganized and very poorly put together, or very onesided and extremely false

f. What do the statistics quoted in the third paragraph of this piece reveal?
    - There are over 2 million articles in 280 languages and it is one of the top 10 most visited sites.

g. Why do you think Wikipedia is so successful?
    - Its is one of the top listed articles off of any search engine,  is easy to use and contains may different articles.

h. Why might Wikipedia’s creators not want to accept advertising?
    - This way there is no bribery involved or false advertisement

i. How does Wikiscanner help increase the reliability of Wikipedia entries?
   - It allows the anonymous users IP address to be checked in order to block and track down anyone that abuses the site.

Quote: I was placed in the “dummy class.” There were three of us, separated from our classmates at a table in the corner of the room. One day, the teacher, who seldom spoke to us since it was understood that most of what she taught was beyond the reach of our intelligence, placed books in our hands and whispered that we should sit there quietly “pretending to read.” The principal was coming.

Reference:http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/04/opinion/sunday/with-dyslexia-words-failed-me-and-then-saved-me.html?_r=1

Relfection: I found this quote particularly disturbing although I know in this time little was knowing about such disablities as dyslexia. It wasn't the lack of knowledge that bothered me so much but more the lack of assistance the lack of faith in th student and the over all ignorance of the teacher. How anyone could stick a student in the corner and ignore them and deprive them of the ability or the gift to obtain a greater knowledge of the world around them disturbs me wore than words can describe. I feel that the teachers and the school system were so closed minded about these students and could have done so much more for them if they simply would have thought outside the box and had a little more faith in ALL of their students.

Quote: "More than 50% of these participants had moved from an internet relationship to a "real life" one. Nearly a quarter became engaged, married or lived together."

Reflection: I was completely amazed when I read this. I would have figured that internet dating would have lead to a higher percentage of failed relationships. I just dont see how a website can lead to more strong serious relationships but then it also make sense that people are more upfront about themselves or their opinions on online dating sites, social networking sites, etc. If this seems to be a successful future for many people I am all about it however I personally still don't see how online dating can be this successful.

web 2.0 tool

The tool I discovered and found the most interesting and versatile was tikatok. Where you can create your own book. I think this gooo could be used on almost any grade level in one way or another although it would probably be more suited for younger children as opposed to older students. You could incorporate it in to your lesson plan very easily personally as a history major I would choose to have the student help create a book related to the topic being studied in the class room at that particular time because they would enjoy the involvement as well as feel a sense of accomplishment for helping create the book as well as memorizing the crucial facts of the lesson.

Magazine Cover

Deconstructing Arnold 2

1. What do you see? How does he look?
the background is a more professional welcoming color, his wardrobe is very political

2.  How does he make you feel?
This makes me feel like I am looking at a very good well put together candidate running for governor, He seems polished and cut out for the job and  has an encouraging smile.

3. What do you think about this person now? How does he make you feel?
I think this portrays him and give me the overall feeling that he is much more professional makes him seem like an all around good guy.

4. How does he look?  How do those "looks: influence how you feel?
once again the overall concept of this photo seems political, he looks very trustworthy and cut out for the job this would definitely be a positive photo for his campaign

5. What lifestyles, values, points of view are represented or omitted?
this just gives the overall picture of a politician there is nothing that could be seen as offensive by anyone its a very safe picture that would be appealing to many different age groups and backgrounds.

Deconstructing Arnold 1

1. What do you see? How does he look?
In this photo he looks very tough and almost dangerous ,he looks very rough around the edges as well as being in front of the flame background giving it a very edgy and tough look.

2.  How does he make you feel?
From what I see in this picture the first thought that comes to my mind is initimidating, he looks like someone I would not want to run into on the streets.
3. What do you think about this person now? How does he make you feel?
This photo accurately describes his role as an action movie star he seems tough and intimidating.

4. How does he look?  How do those "looks: influence how you feel?
Once again the overall apperance of this photo is very masculine and tough

5. What lifestyles, values, points of view are represented or omitted?
there is no sense of him being"an average joe" in this photo he does not seem like an everyday type of guy in this photo.

Quote: From video games to social networks, incorporating what students are doing online into the school curriculum holds great, and perhaps the only, promise for keeping students engaged in learning.

Reflection: This quote from the reading shows that technology and using it to relate to students is the best hope that educators have reaching them the best they can. we all know that by using something new and interesting you spark the students attention at a greater level than by using the usual traditional  methods of classroom teaching. As our society continues to become more enveloped in the many different forms of technology it is important for teachers to stay up to date on trends in technology targeted for the age group that they are teaching in order to possibly incorporate it in their curriculum and make the students more aware of digitial media literacy by using some of the common tools and wbsites that the students use on a daily basis.

Double Jounal #6

QUOTE: “If you pulled it off the
Web, that means it was an early version
written very quickly for immediate
use on the Web. I would bet I wrote
that version in a very few minutes.” An
opportunity for a reporter to provide
context, background, and depth for
the online reader is lost—an omission
under time constraints. Students will
find that such omissions are common
in news reporting."

Response: I found this quote particularly striking due to the fact that our culture is so lost in the media that many of us would never even consider to doubt our sources especially from credible names such as national news or reliable websites. After reading it though it will most likely stike you as being the truth about all of this, after all isnt the whole media game about breaking stories first and making it more inticing to the reciver of the message in order to get higher ratings or have more people rely on them more than others to read or hear their top news stories? This idea is one that we really need to impress upon students regularly so that as they grow and develop they learn to research the information that they read or hear more carefully in order not to be mislead and enveloped in  poor media.

Obama Inference 2

People
Objects
Activites
President Obama
Books
Thinking of Consequences of small flaws in his plan
Very disturbed and concerned looks, as if there is a great worry on his shoulders
Plants
Clearly discouraged with the situation and considering the effects directly on himself as well as the entire nation
Hair beginning to grey as most presidents do, showing the pressures of the job
Window or door giving a view outside
Contemplating Actions to resolve the situation

The inference made from this image is that President Obama seems to be in a great deal of doubt or dispair everything about it from the setting to the presidents body language seemd to be grim, it makes it easier for us as a society to have doubts in the presidents abilities as a whole.

The question that comes to mind from viewing this image is " Can he do it, can he handle a crisis of this magnitude?" due to the overall view of the picture it seems that even he is doubting his abilities and decisions, or "is he simply worried about how this will reflect him in his role as president?"

Which picture gives you more confidence in the president's leadership abilities? Why?
The first picture of President Obama gives me more confidence in his presidential leadership skills and abilities because the overall scene of the picture as well as the caption gives the idea that he is on the right track to solving and dealing with the crisis that would affect our nation as a whole and could potentially cause grave danger to those especially on the coast and interfere with all waterways. He seems to have a great deal of integrity and hope that he will solve the issue and seems to view it very positively where as in the second picture he looks very disturbed and worried with the issue at hand as well as how it will reflect him personally as well as how it will impact the nation.

What I have infered from this image is that President Obama seems to have everything together and seems to be formulating a plan to deal with the crisis on his hands. He comes off as calm cool and collected, and seems to show through his body language and demeanor that he is very confident in his abilities to handle such a situation.

This image really only raises  the question of "what will he do?" from viewing his body language and the overall demeanor htat can be percieved from the image it puts a great deal of faith in him and his leadership abilities.

What's your learning style?

Using the VARK questionaire I discovered that like most of the population I am a multimodal learner but my score reflected that my two greatest areas of learning are aural ( to hear) and Kinesthetic (to do)  so basically to listen to a lecture and participate in discussions as well as doing hands on activities will be most beneficial to my learning style. I always knew that I learned best by doing but I never realized how much listening affected my learning abilities until I took this test. I feel this test is very accurate and it made me realize that not everyone is aware of their learning style. This made me dsicover that in the classroom it is very important to use a large variety of different techniques in everything you do in order to reach every students as much as you possibly can.

Double Journal Entry #2

"In each instance, technology enhances our ability to manipulate our communication with others. As the arsenal of control devices continues to grow, we increasingly come to see language not as an opportunity for interpersonal dialogue but as a system we can maneuver for individual gain."

Reflection: This statement is so unbelievably true as soon as I read it I automatically thought about how many times I've gone off line to avoid talking to someone on instant messenger or Skype  or how I've ignored phone calls and texts simply claiming " I never got your message" or " Well my phone never rang". Today we have so many ways we can control who we talk to, how we talk to them, and when we talk to them. Although these technologies all provide us with easier ways to communicate it also provides us with an easier way to avoid communication. This is part of the idea that technology could be detrimental to our society with all of these ways to avoid communication we need to find ways to reinforce communication as well since it is so important to even the proper functioning of our society.

Double Journal Entry #1

Quote: "Chances are just that good that, in spite of anything you do, little Oliver or Abigail won’t end up a doctor or lawyer — or, indeed, anything else you’ve ever heard of. According to Cathy N. Davidson, co-director of the annual MacArthur Foundation Digital Media and Learning Competitions, fully 65 percent of today’s grade-school kids may end up doing work that hasn’t been invented yet...For those two-thirds of grade-school kids, if for no one else, it’s high time we redesigned American education."

Response: Every Parent aspires for their child to have such an elite, traditional and respected career from the time the child is born or maybe even conceived. The thing that these parents and even some teachers do not consider is the fact that our technology is rapidly changing and "old school" trades are much less important. With this general statement I also realized that things I learned in elementary school even six or seven years ago are severely outdated and completely useless in some cases better yet some of the things I learned two years ago as a freshman in college are completely inadequate for the rapidly changing technology of today. Two- thirds of the children learning the basics in their elementary years, even students in high school are being prepared to go out into a world where their degree and profession are completely non-existent. When reading that quote I hope you now understand the importance of keeping children and educators up to date on the ever changing technology!

Just a little bit about me

Hi! I'm Gabriella Harcharik, but most people just call me Abby. I'm from a small town in the tip of the northern panhandle called New Cumberland, West Virginia and no its not much but its home to me and I wouldn't trade it for the world. I'm working towards a degree in secondary education and in the near future I hope to be teaching high school students anything from state history to world history. I chose this major for 2 purposes it allows me to  have a huge impact on young people and my community and it allows me to be very family oriented and that's all I can ask for. So that's about all there is to it!
